Kindle Highlights Import
If you read on a Kindle, you probably have hundreds of highlights and notes stored in Amazon’s reading app. Bookworm can import them directly into the matching book — keeping chapter, page number, highlight color, and the original passage right alongside your own annotations.
Exporting from Kindle
Section titled “Exporting from Kindle”- Open the Kindle app (iOS, Android, or desktop) or sign in at read.amazon.com.
- Open the book whose highlights you want to export.
- Tap or click Notebook (the icon with the page and bookmark).
- Tap the Export button (usually a share icon in the top right).
- Choose HTML and save the file. The Kindle app exports several variants (None, APA, MLA, Chicago) — any of them works; Bookworm reads them all.
The resulting file looks like Book Title (Portuguese Edition) - Notebook.html. Bookworm strips the (... Edition) suffix when matching against your library.
Importing into Bookworm
Section titled “Importing into Bookworm”- Open the book in your library.
- Scroll to the Notes section.
- Click Import from Kindle (top right of the notes section).
- Choose the HTML file you exported.
- Review the preview — Bookworm shows the detected book title, every highlight, every note, and flags entries that already exist.
- Click Import to confirm.
Mobile
Section titled “Mobile”- Open the book in the mobile app.
- Switch to the Notes tab.
- Tap the upload icon in the header.
- Pick the HTML file from your phone’s storage.
- Review the preview and tap Import.
What gets imported
Section titled “What gets imported”- The full highlighted passage is stored alongside your own note (if any).
- Chapter title (the section heading from Kindle).
- Page number.
- Highlight color (yellow, blue, pink, orange, green, aqua/teal, red, purple).
- Notes attached to highlights are merged into a single entry — the passage plus your annotation, together.
- Standalone notes appear as regular notes without a highlighted quote.
The position number (internal Kindle reference) is intentionally ignored — page number is enough for navigation.
Book matching
Section titled “Book matching”When you click Import, Bookworm compares the book title in the file with the book you’re viewing.
- If the titles match closely, the import goes through silently.
- If the titles differ (different book, or significantly different name), Bookworm shows a warning and asks you to confirm with a checkbox before importing.
Suffixes like (Portuguese Edition), (English Edition), (Spanish Edition) are stripped automatically before comparison.
Duplicate handling
Section titled “Duplicate handling”If you re-import the same file (or a different export of the same book), Bookworm silently skips entries that already exist. The preview shows you how many are duplicates before you confirm. Matching is based on highlighted text + page number — capitalization and trailing whitespace don’t matter.
Free vs Premium
Section titled “Free vs Premium”| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Import Kindle highlights | ✓ | ✓ |
| Unlimited imports per book | ✓ | ✓ |
| Duplicate detection | ✓ | ✓ |
| Color, chapter, page preserved | ✓ | ✓ |
The Kindle import is available to everyone — no premium gate.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”“Could not read the file” — make sure the file is the HTML export from Kindle’s Notebook view, not a clippings text file or a .epub. The file should start with <!DOCTYPE html> and contain <div class="bookTitle">.
Title mismatch warning — if the warning looks wrong (the title actually does match), check whether the book in your library has a slightly different title from the Kindle file. You can rename your book in Edit Book or just check the “Import anyway” box.
“Preview expired” — the parsed preview is cached on the server for 10 minutes. If you wait too long between preview and confirm, just upload the file again.
